Youth Programs

Youth Week

Youth Week is a National celebration of youth achievements and programs in individual communities. The week of April 30 - May 6, 2012 has been chosen to highlight the activities that are available to youth in the community and to celebrate the achievements and presence of youth in North Bay.

Since 2001, the city of North Bay and many community organizations have been working to develop and grow youth programming in the city. The retention, attraction and engagement of youth continues to be a priority. Major issues such as youth out-mig ration, social programming, education and employment opportunities continue to be addressed as new programs and services become available to youth in North Bay.

Youth are the future leaders of our businesses, communities and our country, and as such, should be recognized, celebrated and heard. The stories that follow represent just some of the talented and motivated youth in North Bay. Those profiled here are all youth in North Bay, and are to be celebrated during Youth Week.

This is to invite you to participate in a celebration of youth in our community. Youth Week will take place April 30 - May 6, 2012.

In support of youth week the organizing committee is inviting you to take part in one of two ways:

Youth Programs and Services

We want to create a community resource that lists youth programs, services and special events. If you provide programs or services targeted at youth between the ages of 12 and 24 years of age, simply complete the attached form and return it to us. We wi ll then post the information on the City of North Bay website under a "Youth Programs and Services" link. The information will also be added to our Calendar of Events.

Please complete the Youth Week Program Form and send it to the Parks and Recreation department.

Celebrating Youth in our Community

Youth are the future leaders of our businesses, communities and our country and as such should be recognized, celebrated and heard.

We want to hear about youth that have impacted you or your organization in positive ways through leadership, service, or a particular achievement.

These stories will be published on the "Youth Programs and Services" link page in celebration of these accomplishments. If you know of a youth you wish to celebrate, refer to the information package attached, complete the form and return it to us at the address provided.

2012 Youth Week Nominations

Ryan Kelusky - Youth of the Year 2012

A first year student at Nipissing University, Ryan Kelusky is devoted to far more than his studies. At the age of eighteen, Ryan has received four accomplishment awards, participated in eight annual events for six consecutive years, and also maintained participation on five teams for six years. Aside from his own commitment to the community, Ryan also aims to motivate and encourage participation from his peers, demonstrating leadership in all aspects of his life.

Ryans' measured accomplishments include: completing 200 hours in the Northern Ontario Gliding Centre, including holding his status as a familiarization pilot; dedicating himself as a Squadron Commander for the local cadets for over seven years, and achieving the rank of Warrant Officer First Class; being awarded as the Best Overall Cadet, and Top Gun; as well as receiving the Legion Medal of Excellence in 2010, Air Cadet Long service medal, and the Lord Strathcona Medal in 2011, indicating his excellence in military and physical training.

As a community leader, Ryan has participated in the Remembrance Day Ceremonies, Battle of Britain Parade, Christmas Hampers project, Santa Claus Parade, 22 Wing Family Fun Day, Armed Forces Day, Crime Stoppers Gala, and the Canadian Tire Christmas Wrapping efforts for six uninterrupted years. In addition to this, Ryan is a positive role model for the local cadets, involving himself with all aspects of the program, including community service events, local training programs and summer training programs. Some of his training programs have included Flying Scholarship and International Exchange to Australia, along with voluntary training such as First Aid training, Biathlon Team training, Orienteering Team and much more. In his spare time, Ryan also fulfills countless volunteer hours with the Northern Ontario Gliding Centre, improving his abilities, receiving his back seat rating as a glider and aiding in the training of new cadets.

While many of his accomplishments are measured with awards and certificates, Ryan also shines in his enthusiasm and ability to motivate others. He is a great leader when teaching cadets and aviation, and shows initiative to move community projects forward. Selflessly devoting many hours of his time, Ryan has been recognised with a variety of prestigious awards, commending him for his efforts. He is recognised as a significant supporter of the community, and an exemplary model for youth throughout the region.

Kenisha Chew - Honourable Mention 2012

Young and enthusiastic, Kenisha has taken it upon herself to develop a strong commitment to her community. At only fourteen years of age, Kenisha has already become involved in furthering her abilities and striving to become a well-rounded individual.

Kenisha is active on a variety of sports teams and activities within her school, St. Luke, as well as throughout the community. Her devotion to sports is recognised in her placements of 4th, 7th, 10th and 30th in the Northern Ontario cross-country races competition. In addition to this, Kenisha actively involves herself with the Glee Club at her school, demonstrating her positive attitude and compassion towards others. As a leader, Kenisha has held the positions of Treasurer and Secretary for Student Council for two consecutive years. She is committed in her roles and shows her enthusiasm through teamwork, dedication and responsibility, gaining respect from her principal, teachers, peers and priest.

With such passion for involvement, Kenisha was selected to represent St. Luke during an annual Santa Fund event that was broadcasted over a local radio station. Being introduced by another student, Kenisha presented a written cheque donation on behalf of the school. In addition, she participated in one of the schools’ Christmas activities that engaged Santa’s return letters to students and Kenisha read those letters to the younger grades.

Outside of school events and activities, Kenisha engages herself in local fundraisers such as collecting food for the local Food Bank, creating pins in support of Breast Cancer research and offering them to students for a small donation, as well as raising pledges for the annual Jump Rope for Heart fundraiser. She also donates her clothes annually to local organizations. Her volunteer commitment doesn’t end there, however. Kenisha also devotes herself to Big Brothers/Big Sisters, the Walk for Diabetes, Ministerial Duties for her Church and other weekly volunteer opportunities. On Sundays, she provides Alter and Usher service for her Church, as well as aiding with the organization of bimonthly socials.

In addition to school and community events, Kenisha is a member of the 104 Brilliant Sea Cadets. She has participated in various events through the organization, such as a fundraising event “Tag Day”, Santa Claus Parade, Remembrance Day Memorial Services and the Battle of Britain Memorial Service. During her two years with the cadets, Kenisha has been promoted to the rank of Master Seaman (in 2012), achieved her White Sail certification in sailing in 2011, placed tenth in the Biathlon at the regional competition, completed her General Training at camp at the University of Kingston in 2011, and become a member of the Drill Team reaching the regional competition in 2011.

During the last four years, Kenisha has also been a carrier for the North Bay Nugget. Her fluency in both French and English allows her to provide excellent service to her neighbourhood customers.

Finding time to commit herself to a variety of responsibilities, Kenisha has become an excellent role model for youth throughout the community.
